Simple bedtime rituals for ages 3–7

A little rhythm for the end of the day.

Try making room for one familiar, unhurried moment: choose a story together, settle somewhere comfortable, and turn the pages at your child’s pace.

Let your child choose a favourite character or picture. You don’t need to finish every page. Sometimes a conversation about a tiny detail is the best part of storytime.

End with something you can repeat: a favourite line, a cuddle, or a wish for tomorrow. Keep the ritual simple enough to enjoy together.

Build a rhythm that fits your evening

Try a simple sequence: get comfortable, choose a book, read together, then say goodnight. A quiet routine does not need props or a perfect room. Pick a place where you can sit close enough to see the pictures, and keep the choices manageable: two books to choose from can be plenty.

Make space for different ages

For younger children, spend time naming things in a picture or repeating a favourite phrase. Older children may want to guess what a character will do next or read a line themselves. Let your child decide how much to join in. Listening, pointing, and quietly looking are all ways of sharing a story.

Keep a printable story ready

If you use a digital storybook, print it earlier in the day and check that the pages are in order. Keep the sheets together in a folder so you are not searching for a page at bedtime. Save colouring and more active activities for another moment if your child is ready to settle down.

When the evening does not go to plan

Some nights a whole story will feel like too much. Read one page, look at a favourite illustration, or simply talk about a character you both remember. These are ideas for shared storytime, not a sleep programme; choose what fits your family and your child’s mood.
